For 2 years now, I’ve been lucky enough to attend the Augmented World Expo (augmentedworldexpo.com), the longest-lasting and largest conference and exhibition on Augmented & Virtual Reality, Wearable Technologies, and the Internet of Things (IoT). If you haven’t had an opportunity to go, I encourage you to attend in 2016 and every year after! You will see technologies that are currently being used that are so advanced it’ll blow your mind! Guaranteed!

This post is about the world’s leading Augmented Reality/4D company, DAQRI, based in LA. They are a HUGE player in the augmented reality space because not only do they have their Smart Helmet that sets a new higher standard for industrial, professional-grade wearables, but they also create state-of-the-art AR software and other impressive solutions. In addition, DAQRI provides the best tools to create AR software, which is sorely needed in the AR-space. The company is paving the way to a whole new era of computing. Kudos to DAQRI!
DAQRI acquired ARToolworks, a pioneer in AR and the creator of the ARToolkit. The ARToolkit is the world’s most popular library for AR application development. There is a free open source library that you can download today here!
One of the limitations to the ease of use of building AR applications is the lack of tooling such as the AR Toolkit. DAQRI is leading the way to help emerging technology developers by providing tooling like this.
DAQRI is also helping emerging technology developers via their 4D Studio, which is the first true IDE to create AR applications. Just click on the link to see how awesome and advanced this 4D Studio is! It comes with 4D templates, interactions, an easy UI interface, social integration and even advanced analytics to give you actionable insight of your applications. It’s built for the enterprise, so creating, managing, and distributing 4D content is easy via workflows and a publishing system. They also have an Industrial 4D Studio for aiding workers in the industry that is enhanced by security and can publish Industrial 4D apps that run on multiple form factors.
The hallmark of DAQRI’s AR creations is their Smart Helmet. It displays real-time, contexual 4D content; therefore it’s totally hands-free. The helmet integrates with existing form factors such as smartwatches. It has the most advanced sensors available including an industrial-grade inertial measurement unit, a high-resolution 3D depth camera plus 360-degree navigation camera. It supports HD video recording, photography, 3D mapping and alphanumeric capturing, to name a few impressive features.
To learn more, watch the YouTube video of “DAQRI Smart Helmet: Under the Hood” or the latest demo of DAQRI’s Smart Helmet for Work from AWE2015. DAQRI’s Smart Helmet won the “2015 Edison Gold Award” for Industrial Solutions – that should convince you how cool this company is!
DAQRI impressed me when I first visited their booth at AWE2014. Below is a photo of me by their “Universe Demo” (linked video is short, but as you brought your smart device further out it showed the universe, closer the planets, finally when close the human anatomy). It was really spectacular!
Below are some photos I took of that demo:
At AWE2014, they also had a stupendous AR demo of chemical elements. Click the link in the previous sentence to watch the demo in action. Below is a photo I took of it being demoed in their booth, but you really need to watch the video to appreciate this amazing app!:
They also had an AR anatomy app at AWE2014 that you can watch by clicking the link in this sentence and below is a photo I took when there:
Also at AWE2014, DAQRI had their “Enchantium Table” Game using Smart Terrain. Click on the link in the previous sentence to watch a video of it. Below is a photo I took while being “AWE”‘d 😉
You’ll find many, many resources on DAQRI’s site, but I’ll include a few more fantastic YouTube videos from AWE2015 because, well…they’re just too “AWE”-some to miss!
Brian Mullins, DAQRI’s CEO, gave a keynote session at AWE2015:
Brian Selzer from DAQRI gave this phenomenal presentation on “The Future of Play“:
Here’s a video on “The Future of Work” from DAQRI’s CEO:
And finally, DAQRI’s President Andy Lowery presented on “How to Measure the Impact of AR in the Enterprise“:
