3D Printing 100x Faster, Inspired by “Terminator 2”, TED Talks

I have an awesome intellectual collaborator named Dr. Don Nagy, CEO at California Computer Research, Inc. located at the University of California, Irvine - where I was in Pre-Med long ago. Don works closely with Dr. Robin Felder, Ph.D. Professor of Pathology, Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry, The University of Virginia and Dr. Jim Earthman Ph.D. at University of California, Ecole Polytechique Federale de Lausanne, Stanford University. Dr. Nagy & I never seem to have enough time to collaborate on the numerous topics of interest we share. We initially met when he approached me when I was a new Google Glass Explorer (2nd round) to consult for he and his colleagues on how Google Glass could be used in teleoperations in diagnostic units in clinical laboratories. I actually had the privilege (& fun!) of driving VGo robots in a clinical lab on the east coast from my home office in sunny California! One of the last topics we talked about was centered around a TED Talk … [Read more...]

Top 10 Augmented Reality Trends for 2014

Me inside the DAQRI Virtual Flight Attendant AR 4D Experience

Augmented Reality to me means uber-cool, helping industries in amazing ways, and although it's not expected to really be mass adopted until 2020, whoever isn't following this mind-blowing technology isn't looking toward the future. The image above is of me at the Augmented World Expo 2014 #awe2014 in DAQRI's large exhibition hall booth. In one section they had this Virtual Human (to quote DAQRI) "takes 4D to the next level, bringing full-sized photorealistic people to life and providing the ultimate storytelling experience. Virtual Humans pairs intelligent 360-degree image capture technology with 4D, opening the door for truly engaging storytelling and life-size gaming opportunities where virtual characters are as real as the audience." So on to the topic of the Top 10 AR Trends for 2014. First of all, let me start by saying that the AR market in 2014 is predicted to grow rapidly. Revenues are expected to hit $5.2 billion by 2017. Trends: Wearable Technology: Wonder why I … [Read more...]

The Glass Class at the Augmented World Expo 2014

Me & Jenny Murphy

I attended "The Glass Class" with leaders Mark Billinghurst of HITLabs (Human/Computer Interface Technology), Rob Lindeman of HIVE (Human Interactions in Virtual Enviroments) Labs, Det Ansinn of BrickSimple, and Jenny Murphy, a Developer Advocate at Google focused on Google Glass and wearable technology. Short bios on the panelists are below this article. I learned A LOT about Google Glass, what to do/not to do when developing for it, the APIs to develop Glass apps with, and the many 3rd party apps that integrate with Glass. Below is a photo of the panelists: I have a couple of #throughglass short movie clips from the class (amateur quality, I guess I was too excited about what I was learning when I told Glass to "record a video"! But I'll share them with you here. The first two videos demonstrate the incredible uses of Glass in the medical field, being used TODAY. I don't know if you know this, but I work with MARC (Medical Automated Research Center) with Dr. Don Nagy, … [Read more...]

3D Printed Cast That Helps Bones Heal 40-80% Faster

Osteoid 3D pRINTED Cast

It's called "Osteoid". The word "osteoid" in histology is the unmineralized, organic portion of the bone matrix that forms prior to mature bone tissue. It's extremely obvious why this invention would have that name: Osteoid was created by Turkish student Deniz Karasahin. He incorporated 3D printing & ultrasonic tech to make bone healing faster. In effect, Deniz was able to get ultrasonic healing vibrations to bones by using the skeletal deign, and ultrasonic drivers are placed under the skin. It's a protoype today, but technology is making light-speed advancements in medicine. … [Read more...]
